Kitty's diary (2)

 January the 9th, Saturday

Today is the first day of our new project. I’m kind of excited. I love helping people, but working with Lucky is sure to leave a bad taste in my mouth. As soon as we reach school, we realize that something strange is going on. Everyone has gathered outside for some reason. Ms. Lucy clears up my confusion with her announcement. “For the project, today you will have the day out of school. But you are ONLY supposed to work on the project. At the end of the day, you will tell the whole class what you have accomplished. Capishe?” “Yes, Ms. Lucy” chanted the class. I grabbed Charity arm and yanked her into the crowd of bustling students. We soon find Lizzie and just as we are about to run out of the crowd, accidently- on purpose forgetting Lucky, I catch a whiff of expensive French perfume. Seriously. Fancy perfumes. That’s what this girl is spending on when half the population doesn’t have enough to eat. “Oh no,” I mutter under my breath, steeling myself for a blast of UN- Luckiness. Ugh, I despise that girl. “ You forgot me,” she pouts, her bright white smile not reaching her icy blue eyes. “ Sorry I’m not sorry,” I tell her loudly. Lucky wrinkles her nose at me and says even more loudly, “ Well we don’t have to go collecting scraps, I got my mother to buy some clothes from the second hand store yesterday. You’re welcome. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go paint my nails again,” she said holding out a perfectly painted fingernail. “SOME of us care about our looks.” I squinted at her hand and glared at her impeccably styled hairs. To hide my anger,  I looked down at my own nails, of which one of them held a splash of red from the last time I painted them. “ Do you have a beauty, sorry, ugliness pageant tomorrow, ‘cus your nail really don’t look like they need any more paint. They are already hideous.” I told her. She glared at me, “No, but I’m sure I’d win a beauty pageant. I never fail to do anything in anything.”

“Really? Well, as far as I know, you’ve failed at being a decent human being every day of your life.” There are gasps around me, and Lucky turns scarlet. She huffs and storms away. I raise my eyebrows. “Wow. She didn’t even contradict me.” There are tides of laughter around me. “Now that we don’t have to collect clothes, lets help someone else,” suggested Lizzie. Both me and Charity nodded and we walked over to our friend Karthik who was clowning around with his partners. “Hey girls,” he said, flashing us a grin, “We heard about the UnLucky incident. Kudos to you Kat, that idiot had it coming.” I smiled at him and hit him lightly on the shoulder. “You bozos need our help?” asked Lizzie. “You got it Liz!” exclaimed Jai Sky, another one of the boys on Karthik’s team. “ So, let’s go, BlueJay.” (We call him that cus azure is a shade of blue, and Ms. Lucy call out Azure, Jai for roll call. So it is an Azure jay, or a blue jay. So, BlueJay) Laughing we all ran. By evening, we had enough non- perishables for 15 households to last a couple of days. Mainly from the rich families of Diamante road. Who knew that all big shots weren’t snobs. After we presented our collections, Ms. Lucy beamed at us and gave us a gift, ribbons made out of velvet and silk, crazy patchwork though it was, I was proud of it. as soon as I got home, I put in my treasure chest, aka, Harry Potter pencil box. Got to go, bye. Write l8r,

   Kat.
